Zombie Character Development

The following are sketches and experiments that were done in the design process of coming to the final decision of the zombie girl, Caitlin.

Head Designs

These sketches were a quick exercise to help with the zombifying of the character. The faces were taken from people watching and then added the grotesque we wanted to achieve in the zombie look development. The aim was to make sure every head carried a different personality and trait to who they were before the virus and after and how it translates from human to zombies.

Silhouette Exploration

We started off with silhouettes to explore the varieties of possible silhouettes for the zombie as zombies can come in many shapes and forms. The silhouettes were then picked and further developed into zombie looking characters based on the shape and form.

First Cycle Exploration

The comments given were that these zombies of the first cycle of exploration still looked too human neck down and they needed more artifacts that showed that they were zombies and not just merely depending on the head.

Second cycle exploration

Taking the feedback into consideration, we went back to the drawing board and added more decay and fungi as seen in zombies in most games and movies. We also added missing flesh to give more than just a flat texture to the form. We also explored and pushed the silhouettes a lot more.

Concept Mesh

The designs were generally appealing in a nice grotesque way and hence we proceeded to see how the sketches would translate into 3D form and whether the designs would actually work in 3D space and still maintain that appeal as of the sketch.

Hair Design

After having decided on a rough face shape, we proceeded to designing the hairstyle that would fit her outgoing tomboy-ish personality. We generally liked the idea of spikes as part of her hairstyle as it goes with her fiesty characteristic.

Clothing Design

The initial concept was of Caitlin being a diner girl to go with her cheery outgoing self. A lot of research was put into the 90s and 80s where diners were popular and implementing it into her uniform design.
